Hives: What are Hives and How to Identify Them

HIVES


Hives is a skin disease, also called urticaria, that causes itching, redness, welts, and swelling on the patient's skin.

Hives are usually red or pink bumps (welts) or flesh-coloured, with sometimes painful swelling.

The hives reaction happens when you come into contact with some substance that affects your immune system, and your body releases antibodies and histamines against the normally harmful substances.

Most of time hives gets better on its own within some hours, sometime hives can be not cure for several days or longer.

Types of hives


Hives are generally of two types:

1. Chronic hives

2. Acute hives

Acute hives: Acute hives are short-lived hives caused by food allergy, insect bite, drink, side effects of medicine, or close contact with harmful substances.

Chronic hives
:
long-term hives More than six weeks and returns after over months and years caused by cancer, autoimmune, thyriod, infection, hepatitis.



Symptoms of the hives


The symptoms of hives vary from person to person.

• Itching

• Swelling skin surface

• Red, purple, or pink coloured welts in depending your skin colour.

• painful swelling

• Welts or bumps on your skin

• Usually, hives last no longer than 24 hours.

• Angioedema: Swelling occurs under the eyes.




Causes of hives


Hives are caused by chemicals such as histamines that release your immune system.

Histamines are chemicals that mast cells release into the bloodstream. histamines make the blood vessels expand and the surrounding skin itchy and swollen.

Mast cells also release serotonin; high levels of histamine and serotonin cause allergy.

This chemical helps your body to defend itself against infection and other outside intruders.

• Hot and cold temperatures

• UV rays

• Chemical

• Side effects of medicine

• Pollen grains

• Animal dander

• Insect bite

• Stress

• Tight clothes

• Illness or infection like thyroid disease or cancer

Diagnosis of hives


Skin test: during skin test very small amount chemical injected patient body something you might be allergic.

Blood tests: A blood test also helps to diagnose hives because hives patients have a raised IgE antibody level.

Biopsy: During a biopsy, a surgeon cuts a small portion of the affected part, collects a sample of tissue, and tests it in a laboratory under a microscope.


Prevention of hives

• You can prevent your hives changing life style like avoid food and close contact some substance that cause allergy.

• Avoid contact uv rays

• Avoid foods that cause hives, e.g., peanuts, milk, shellfish, soy, fish, eggs, and wheat.

• For soap and detergent powder, use natural soap and detergent powder.

• Clothing: Wear loose clothes wear cotton and natural - fiber clothes.

• Avoid contact: Avoid contact if you have allergy to some substance that cause allergy eg: Dyes , air freshener, pollen grains, scent.

Treatment of hives

Mostly hives is treated by antihistamine medicine like.

Antihistamines: Antihistamines are medicines that help suppress hives symptoms, e.g.
Fexofenadine (Allegra)
Loratadine (Alavert, Claritin)
Cetirizine (Zyrtec).

 • Diphenhenhydramine
 • Destoratadine (clarinex)
 • Fexofenadine
 • Levocetrizine (xyzal)

Home remedies

Giloy: Take two to three Giloy leaves with stems and grind them. Boil them in 500 ml of water. When there is 250 ml left, drink it.

Coconut oil and Camphor Apply on the skin camphor and coconut oil can cure hives symptoms
